The Beauty of Service
Selfless service means giving of yourself to help others with no thought of return. It can be a great aid in dismantling the ego and restructuring personality. Each day is a new opportunity to practice putting another's interests ahead of your own. By giving your time, energy and presence to reduce the suffering or increase the happiness of others, you acknowledge that we are all one and that the happiness of each is connected to the happiness of all. The more you share in and experience the interconnectedness of all beings, the healthier you will be.

If the theme of this blog appeals to you I am sure you will agree with his idealistic message. You also are probably a person who seeks to practice this in your own life. It has strong appeal to me because it reflects altrusism, which I highly value.
At the risk of sounding cynical I observe very little of this in action these days. My son, who works for a major corporation, said he has noticed this too. He rarely hears the word. Is graciousness just a 'girlie' word to the average man's ears? Come to think of it how often have you heard a woman use it lately?
As I said when I began this blog, graciousness is a valuable part of a well-lived life. I don't believe we are born with it; we can only hope to have good teaching of it in our earliest years. If parents are gracious then their children have good role models to learn from. One way to self-test might be to compare oneself with Dr. Weil's description of "the beauty of service."
